All About Bikes & Bicycles – Tyres

There are essentially two types of tyre for bicycles, known as ‘clincher’ and ‘tubular’. We’ll get the tubular ones out of the way first because essentially you won’t come across them very often. Tubular tyres don’t have beads around the edge but are instead sewn together around an inner tube. You can’t use a tubular tyre on just any old rim, you must use a special one and the tyre is held onto the rim using glue. Some riders consider tubulars to have some advantage over clinchers, such as lighter weight, more comfort and better grip but modern technology has seen the clincher tyre catch up.

The main drawbacks of tubular tyres are the fact that if you get a puncture you need to replace the whole tyre meaning you need to carry a spare. The biggest drawback though is the need to glue the tyre to the rim. The glue needs to dry for several hours before you should consider putting it through its paces otherwise the tyre and the rim may part company which almost always results in a crash.

The above also means that if you are racing and get a puncture using tubulars then you are effectively out of the race as you will not be able to corner at speed etc until the glue is dry. That is unless you have a support crew following you with a spare rim and tyre ready to go.

You will find clincher type tyres on almost all rims now days and they will be the most familiar to you. Instead of wrapping completely around the inner tube, the clincher is U-shaped when you cut it in half. The edges of the tyre are held in place against the edge of the rim by the pressure of air inside it. This makes it easier to repair as you don’t need any glue to hold it in place.

The clincher tyre is made up of essentially three components, the bead, the fabric and the rubber.

The bead is usually a strong steel wire which makes up the tyre’s edge and holds it to the rim. Some beads use more modern lightweight materials such as Kevlar which wipes out one of the advantages some riders think that the tubular has.The fabric is what gives a tyre its shape and makes up the tyre’s profile, joining the two beads together. It is usually made of nylon cord and is put down in layers with each subsequent layer being placed perpendicular to the next rather than using a consistent interweaving process. These different layers are known as plies. Tyres come with different performance capabilities some of which are determined by the tyre’s TPI. This denotes the number of Threads Per Inch. A higher number indicates a tyre with a thinner and more flexible fabric. Thin walled tyres tend to perform better by offering less rolling resistance and a lighter weight but they are more easily damaged.

The rubber is the part of the tyre that everyone sees but it is merely a coating on top of the constructed fabric. The rubber provides no structural advantage to the tyre and is only there to protect the fabric from damage. As with any road tyre there will normally be a tread pattern built into the rubber. This provides more advantage in wet weather than under normal conditions. Also as with any other tyre, different compounds of rubber give different performance. A soft compound will give you more grip but it will wear out quicker. A harder compound will last longer but it will slide around more when pushed to the limit.

When you put all the above together you can see that there are many different combinations that can be achieved and so it is important, especially if you are a serious rider to choose a tyre which is suited to the job. So, if you are a road racer then you need to look for specific road racing tyres that suit the rims you have chosen to ride on.

However, the same type of tyre will be useless to you downhill mountain bike racers!

Eight Tips For Bicycle Owners

Cycling is a fun sport and recreational activity, and loads of people love to post tips online for their fellow cyclists. The best tip that I picked up lately was from Dave Leone. He reckons that when you fall off your bike, get back up quickly before your friends ride over you. Here are eight more great tips that I have picked up over the past few weeks.

Tip No. 1:
If you cycle on the roads, make sure that you know all your road signs. This knowledge could be crucial to your safety and well being. So many cyclists fall short because they failed to read a sign correctly, or simply ignored the rules of the road. Keep a copy of the road rules with you, so if you are given any trouble by traffic authorities, you can use them for reference, providing of course you are in the right.

Tip No. 2:
When riding on a trail, make sure to stay on the trail.

Don’t widen the trail by riding around muddy puddles, rather just ride straight through them. In this way the riders that follow you can also enjoy the trail.

Tip No. 3:
By filling your water bottle with water and using a denture tablet in it, you will keep it clean and hygienic. Leave it like this overnight. This will remove all the stains and leave it fresh smelling too.

Tip No. 4:
Keep your cycling helmet clean. With all the sweating, it can get stinky and here is an easy way to clean it. Try wearing it in the shower. Shampoo your hair and then put the helmet on and massage your scalp with the helmet for a few minutes and then rinse it out thoroughly.

Tip No. 5:
Before going for a ride, make sure to warm up. This will prevent injury and ease you into the exercise easier.

You can do jumping jacks, a few stretches or even have a warm shower. A brisk walk also works wonders for loosening your joints up. When you have completed your ride, remember to do a cool down. Do this by riding slowly for the last few minutes, and then stretch out the buttocks, quads, calves and hamstrings.

Tip No. 6:
Get more sleep when training hard for an event. Try to get about nine hours of sleep a night, because during the 7th and 8th hour your mind will really repair and restore itself the most, during the last phase of REM sleep. You will wake up feeling alert and energized all day long if you can get this one right.

Tip No. 7:
If you rip the sidewall on your clincher tire while out for a ride, try this handy tip. Remove the tire first then insert a dollar bill or a wrapper from a power bar between the tire and the tube. Patch the tube if need be and then re-inflate. The strength of the bill or wrapper should be able to get you home safely.

Tip No. 8:
Make sure to replace worn bicycle chains regularly. In this way you will get a longer life out of your cassette cogs and chain rings. To check whether the chain is worn press lightly on the right pedal to tension the chain. Hold a twelve inch ruler against the chain. On a fresh chain the distance of twelve full links from pin to pin is exactly twelve inches. If twelve links on your chain measure 12 1/8 inches or more, then it is time to change it.

Hope you find these tips as useful as I did.

Finding Your Best Bicycle Exercise
There are not a lot of people that understand how to stay motivated when they are exercising from home. You want to make sure that you understand how you are going to push yourself to get a good workout when you are inside.

First, you want to start by taking the time to understand what type of workout is going to be most beneficial for your goals. This means that you have to have goals that are reasonable and plausible for your body.

There are a lot of people that do not understand how they are supposed to be setting these goals. Many times people will set goals that are not reasonable or may even end up being unhealthy for their body type.

When you set goals you need to make sure that you are taking the time to meet with a professional. There are many different types of professionals that you can consult with when you are setting fitness goals.

A personal trainer is a great way to start your goal setting process. You may not even have to hire a personal trainer that you meet with on a consistent basis, but you have to make sure that you at least meet once.

If you meet with a personal trainer you may also be able to make a workout plan that makes the process more beneficial. When you are not interested in meeting with a personal trainer you may want to meet with your doctor.

After you have set your goals you also have to make sure you find a workout that works for your body. When you are taking the time to choose your workout you want to make sure that you understand what machine works best for your body.

If you have joint problems you have to make sure that you understand how you are going to manage those problems. Your joints are an integral part of your body and you want to make sure that you are keeping them healthy as long as possible.

When you have joint problems you may want to try using an exercise bike to get in your cardiovascular workouts. The exercise bike will not require you to strike your legs against the ground, putting pressure on your joints.

Every time that you get on the bike you want to make sure that your joints are prepared adequately. There are many different ways that you can go about getting your joints ready for your workout.

Stretching is very important in the procedure. When you sit down to stretch you want to make sure that you are pushing your body to a new level and you do not want to give up on your stretching because it is uncomfortable.

There are a lot of people that do not understand what their stretching should consist of. If you are having joint problems you want to make sure that you understand how to stretch the muscles around the joints.

When the muscles around the injured joint are tight you will be putting a lot of unnecessary strain on your muscles. You have to make sure that you are taking the time to figure out the best stretches for your body.

Consulting with your doctor about your stretching is important. Many people do not know how to do this on their own and they need to meet with a professional that will show you how to keep your joints healthy.

Once you have adequately stretched your muscles you also need to make sure that you participate in a warm up. When you are warming up you can either do a sprint or you can push at a high intensity.

When you do a sprint you do not want any intensity and you want to pedal as fast as you can. The alternative warm up is when you turn up the intensity and push hard for only a short amount of time.

The warm up that you are doing needs to be something that is good for your body. The warm up that you participate in can help you have a more beneficial workout and prepare your joints to push harder in the workout.

Taking the time to understand what you need to do to have a beneficial workout that is safe is very important. Understanding the differences between what is beneficial for your body and what is too much is important.

Finding how you are going to find balance on an exercise bike is important. The more you understand about your body the better your workout will be.

What is an Electric Bicycle?

A electric bike is among the many models of electric vehicles ranging from electric scooters to electric wheelchairs to commute cars. The light electric bike assists the cyclist by a battery-powered motor attached to the pedals. Some models must be pedaled to activate the motor while others simply operate at the push of a button. They can easily be used to run errands requiring small cargo capabilities or adapted for larger capacities. A light electric bike can range from 10-40 miles depending on the terrain, weight of the cyclist and climate. For longer commutes, the light electric bike can be mounted on the front of most buses.

Many people are turning to the electric bike as a solution to growing financial problems due to the loss of a job or reduction in pay. Others simply enjoy the freedom from stressful traffic jams, pollution and exercise that an automobile cannot provide.

Still others are looking for a viable alternative to the loss of driving privileges. The addition of the motor allows the commuter to arrive at work without needing a shower and clean clothes. The light electric bicycle can be powered on a single battery charge and the energy conserved until going uphill or when the cyclist gets hot and tired. Most errands require short distances to complete and the light electric bike would be perfect. There is no need to look for a parking space, simply lock the bike and go. Cargo space can be increased with the addition of simple accessories.

There are those who simply enjoy the freedom to get on a bicycle and take pleasure in exploring the country and viewing the different sceneries available within a short ride. The addition of the motor means the pleasure cyclist can go further and stay longer without worrying about getting home before dark.

Even if the enjoyment is extended, the cyclist has the option to put headlights on the bicycle and helmet. Some light electric bikes are so complete they have turn signals installed.

The electric bike can come completely assembled and built with a motor and battery installed for 0 to ,500 or a kit can be purchased to modify a standard bike ranging in price from 0 to 0. Either alternative presents its own value for the money and can be used in addition to a family car or instead of one.

What is a light electric bike? It can mean many things to many different people from freedom to a useful alternative to polluting the air with a gasoline-powered automobile. The value is in the eye of the beholder, the potential owner and the possessor. Why not look into one further?

The beauty of Bicycle lies in the fact that it is eco-friendly, it runs with a little effort of your body, no fuel, no engine is required. It is the inexpensive and smart way of traveling by riding a Bicycle when you have to go nearby. That is acceptable that the distance of miles can not be covered by circling on Bicycle Pedals but when it is about going for a few kilometers then it is the best option.
People are getting aware about the environment purification and the fact that natural resources of fuel are scare and they will be finished the way mankind has been exploiting them and this is the reason that people who are working to serve the environment and nature are emphasizing on the usage of eco-friendly resources in daily lives and this is the reason that people are getting aware about the usage of bicycle.

The biggest comfort in using bicycle is that it has very simple structure and it doesn’t need much maintenance and you can do its servicing manually, without getting your pocket lighten at the service centers like you do for your car and motor bike.

Bicycle is all in all a combined set of simple spares such as Brakes, chain wheel, wheels, Bicycle Saddles, Bicycle Pedals and tire & tubes etc.

It costs nothing to ride a bicycle and it covers less space on the road as well and this is the reason that various countries where people have started sitting on Bicycle Saddles instead of their car seats for the purpose of ride have experienced amazing modifications in the ecosystem and the traffic problems have also been resolved. In fact, the environment agencies too emphasize on the usage of bicycle.

Though the awareness phase is still in process and people who are getting aware about the environment purification are switching to the Bicycle Pedals rather than car accelerators and this seems a good step in the field of humankind, expected to result benefits to the mankind, nature and environment.

Riding an Electric Power Bicycle

As time progresses we continue to destroy the environment with the tons of fossil fuels we burn on a daily basis. More and more people are realizing that it is definitely time for us, as a species, to find alternative energy sources that are less destructive to the earth. This need for alternative energy sources has brought about electric cars, solar powered energy sources, and scores of new age windmills. Some ideas are obviously better than others but we can all do our part and start being a bit greener. A great way to do this is to get an electric power bicycle.

Electric bicycles are sweeping through Europe and other areas around the world. The electric power bicycle has gained immense popularity overseas and is starting to pop up all across America as people start realizing this green machine is efficient, cheap, and a lot of fun. Electric bicycles have come about due to innovations in modern technology that has allowed the batteries and electrical systems in these bikes to last longer than ever before.

Why are electric bicycles getting so popular? They’re cheap.

Electric bikes cost between five hundred and fifteen hundred dollars. This may sound like a lot for a bicycle but you have to take into account the bike’s efficient performance and overall impact on your wallet. Standard electric bicycles have been clocked to run anywhere from fifteen to twenty miles per hour; some higher powered off road electric bikes have been clocked at over fifty miles per hour. Gas prices constantly rise almost on a day to day basis and cost most people that have to regularly commute one or two hundred dollars a month. The bike will pay for itself well within a year if you start riding an electric bicycle to work instead of driving.

There are a number of different electric power bicycle companies that are quickly becoming brand names in the industry.

PEDELEC is the top name in Europe for electric bicycles. All their bikes meet regulations for various countries and have proven to be very family friendly. E-BIKE is the big company in the U.S. for people looking to obtain a quality electric power bicycle.

If you are thinking about getting an electric bicycle keep in mind there are three regulations your bike must meet. It must have standard functioning pedals, your bike can’t go faster than twenty miles per hour, and the electric motor cannot exceed seven hundred and fifty watts output. Do your part to help save the environment we have left and save some money in the process by getting an electric bicycle today. Do the responsible thing before it is too late to do anything.

ZoomElectricScooters.com you will find a wide selection of high quality, reliable, electric scooters, electric power bicycle, electric motorcycles, electric mopeds, and mobility scooters.

The history of the Bicycle

It is generally accepted that the bicycle was invented by Baron Von Drais in Germany in 1817. However, it was not until 1863 that a bicycle was developed with the crank and pedal element to it. The first universally popular bicycle did not come into being until 1868. It was manufactured in France under the name ‘Michaux’ with the English giving it the unofficial name ‘The Bone-Shaker’. This name was due to its rigid frame and iron-banded wheels giving the riders a bone shaking experience.

The next major step was probably the invention of the best known bicycle, the Penny Farthing. In 1870 James Starley created a bicycle based on the bone-shaker with an enlarged front wheel and small back wheel. The design was to enable the rider to reach faster speeds and travel with more ease over cobbles, which was handy in London at this time.

The Penny Farthing’s reign was unfortunately short-lived, yet it is always linked with the late Victorian era.

In the 1880s, the Safety Bicycle was invented which revolutionised the public’s attitude towards the bicycle as it was now seen as less dangerous and open to all. The Safety Bicycle improved on the Penny Farthing in four key areas – steering, safety, comfort and speed. This era is often referred to as the golden age of cycling and saw a significant rise in the number of female riders.

With the rise in popularity of the car in the 1900s the bicycle’s popularity declined and they were seen as merely toys for a number of years. It is only as the world has become more and more aware of climate change that the bicycle has become widely used as an alternative form of transport.

It has become apparent that this will continue into the future with companies offering incentives for individuals that cycle to work. With the increasing number of vehicles on the road, cyclists and motorists need to be extremely road aware to ensure that everyone is kept safe.

In the beginning, bicycles were purely for industrial and transport purposes. However, towards the end of the Victorian era cycling was beginning to become a sport. Cycling has continued to increase in popularity as a sport with events such as the Tour de France and the Olympics. It is important that children are encouraged to take up cycling as a hobby and see the outdoors and get fit and healthy at the same time.
